Every day we get the same question. What is a salve?
The definition of a Salve is an ointment used to promote healing of the skin or as protection. Commonly salves are to heal wounds and used to soothe and heal skin conditions. Some salves are antimicrobial; others are for muscle ache, bruising, and blood flow. Salves are sold in wide-top jars, and are applied with the finger, massaging the product directly into affected tissue.
Salves are not formulated with water, which makes them more occlusive than creams and lotions. A salve is a thick ointment that stays on the top of the skin but also penetrates more deeply into the skin. They are great for very dry skin types or for treating specific patches of skin.
Before drug stores and modern medicine, there were herbal salves made by herbalists and botanists using beneficial roots, berries, leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds. Salves are great item to add to your medicine cabinet for natural relief.
